The Genevieve “Denny” Dudley papers date from 1969 to 2016 and measure 3.20 linear feet. The papers are arranged in five series: Biographical, Bell Labs Career, AT and T Career, Research Files, and Audiovisual. Most of the collection file names are based on the organization in which Dudley herself arranged it.

The Biographical series dates from 1969 to 2015 and includes materials related to Dudley’s personal life, beginning and overall career, and retirement. These documents include a career chronology and “photo wrap-up" prepared by Genevieve "Denny" Dudley (including original and drafts), daily calendars, resumes, an overview of performance appraisals, two retirement scrapbooks, and a report written by Dudley titled, “Summit Lay Committee on Education: The Role of the Volunteer in the Schools, 1969 May.”

The Bell Labs Career series dates from 1969 to 1985 and documents Dudley’s work life at Bell Laboratories mostly in the following positions: Volunteers in Action (VIA) Coordinator (1969-1976), Visitor Program Specialist (1969-1978), Employee Information Representative (1978-1979) and (1980-1981), Plans and Programs Representative (1979-1980), Group Supervisor for Employee Information Programs (1981-1982) and Group Supervisor, Bell Operating Liaison (1982-1983). The subcategory Writings and Editing by Genevieve "Denny" Dudley (1979-1981) includes her responsibilities as an Employee Information Representative and a Plans and Programs Representative. A large portion of her work included writings and articles with Bell Labs News and Perspective, a management newsletter edited by Denny Dudley.

The AT and T Career series dates from 1982 to 2012 (1982-1989 bulk) and is comprised of materials related to Dudley's career with AT and T Information Systems. Known as the “Bell System Breakup,” AT and T assumed the business of Bell Laboratories in 1984 after agreeing to divest company of all facilities used to provide telephone service. The collection describes Dudley’s multiple positions in public relations for AT and T including as District Manager for Public Relations (1983-1986) and her roles in Internal and Executive Communication, Business Marketing Group (1986-1989).

Biographical / Historical

Genevieve “Denny” Dudley was born in Sigourney, Iowa and grew up in Davenport, Iowa. Dudley attended Iowa State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Institutional Management with a minor in English. While attending Iowa State, Dudley was heavily involved in extracurricular activities including her leadership positions as chair of Veishea (a large spring celebration at Iowa State), president of her sorority (Gamma Phi Beta) and president of the Women’s Panhellenic. She later married Homer Dudley and had one daughter, two sons, and 2 grandsons.

Dudley initially became interested in volunteer work while working with community schools, churches, and local agencies in Red Oak, Iowa and Summit, New Jersey. While in Summit, Dudley chaired the study for the Summit Lay Committee on Education and wrote a report titled, “The Summit Lay Committee on Education: The Role of the Volunteer in the Schools.” Due to her previous volunteer work and research, Dudley was offered a position after interviewing at Bell Labs (Bell Telephone Laboratories), AT and T’s research center, as the coordinator for Volunteers in Action, a community relations program. Starting in 1969, Denny Dudley worked in several public relations positions for Bell Labs, including researching and writing for Bell Labs News and editing Perspective, a management newsletter. These roles tested her skills as both a writer and communicator. She also created and coordinated several outreach events including the Bell Labs Summer Science Program, an initiative that brought young black students from nearby schools to learn about the expertise of scientists, as well as other community-related projects such as the Bell Labs/YMCA seminar.

In the 1980s, several key events affected Dudley’s career effort including the Union Certification Effort at Merrimack Valley (1981) and the Bell System Breakup (1984), which were both events that involved increased efforts in public relations. For example, Dudley coordinated all employee information, while the Communication Workers of America (CWA) fought to unionize Merrimack Valley’s associate technical staff. With the Bell System Breakup, AT and T agreed to divest the company of all facilities used to provide local service due to an antitrust suit filed by the Department of Justice in 1974. This caused Bell System to split into separate companies to provide local service, while AT and T became the provider of long-distance service. With a new organization and extensive changes, Dudley realized the critical need for close-up employee communication.

Her role evolved to working closely with AT and T top management in Europe (from London to Rome) in the late 1980s. Up to retirement, Dudley also worked closely in outreach and communication to employees through several efforts including the Face-to-Face program, which Dudley launched in the early 1980s to improve relations between employers and top management through in-person meetings. Additionally, her writing skills continued to aid her as a columnist for Datavision, a bimonthly employee newsletter.

Dudley retired in 1989 from AT and T - Bell Labs after 20 years. After retirement, Denny Dudley and her husband settled in Iowa City where she continued her community involvement in several organizations including the Hancher Guild (president, 1995-1996), the Nineteenth Century Club (president, 2004-2005), and as a member of the Congregational Church, United Church of Christ.
