Scope and Contents

The Anna Lehnen papers date from 1885 to 2012 and measure 5 linear inches (1 box). The papers are arranged in two series: Anna Lehnen and Kathryn Smyth.

The Anna Lehnen series contains biographical information and Lehnen’s diaries from 1915 to 1920. The diaries feature her time living in the Penn Township in Johnson County, Iowa where she got the hear Hellen Keller speak and took note of the changes that came with World War I.

The Kathryn Smyth series has her documentation for her graduation from the St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1958 and clippings from her journals.

Biographical / Historical

Anna Amelia Schloeman, later Lehnen, was born in 1877 to John William Schloeman and Anna Margaret Volz Schloeman. She married Samuel Edwin Lehnen in 1904. The two lived in Penn, Iowa and had a daughter Kathryn Margaret. In 1922, her husband was killed by a bolt of lightning. She later remarried to Leon Linmore Riley. They were married until his death in 1959. Lehnen died in 1964.

Kathryn Louise Smyth was born in 1930 to Kathryn Margaret Smyth (Lehnen). She graduated from St. Luke’s Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. She spent her career working at Mercy Hospital and at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She passed away in 2012.
