Scope and Contents

The Graham Family papers date from 1900 to 2019 and measure 5 inches in 1 box. The papers are arranged in two series: Family History and Iowa City Photographs.

The Family History relates to notes and presentations about the Grahams’ family history in Iowa City as well as photographs that are identified as members of the Graham family including Harry, Olin, Don, John, and Lee Graham. The Iowa City Photographs series contains photographs of unidentified individuals or general scenes of Iowa City, including images of the Graham and Son Livery, Feed, and Sale Stable after the 1905 fire. Of note are the images of the horse-drawn buggies and the Livery Stable that were used in the 2020 University Libraries “The Pull of Horses on National and Local Histories and Identities” Gallery Exhibit. These can be found in the Iowa City Livery Stable folder.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Graham was born in 1845 in Ohio. In 1849, the Graham family moved to Scott Township, just east of Iowa City, Iowa, and bought a farm. Robert left the farm in 1899 and bought the Foster Livery Stable in downtown Iowa City. He would change the name to Graham and Son.

Robert Graham owned and operated the Graham and Son Livery, Feed, and Sale Stable in downtown Iowa City from 1899 to 1912. Located at the current site of the Englert Theatre, the Livery was a key feature of Iowa’s turn of the century economy, providing horses with lodgings and community members with a space to exchange goods and conversation. Graham and Son also supplied hacks (taxis), horses, and carriages for visitors, weddings, funerals, and volunteer fire departments. In 1905, the Livery Stable burnt down and was rebuilt on the 200 block of South Clinton Street.

The Grahams operated the Livery until 1915 when motorized vehicles were introduced to the area.
