Biographical / Historical

Laura Jane Brown, Iowa legislator and women’s right activist, was born to Antoinette and Fred Brown in 1935 in Mitchell County, Kansas. Brown spent much of her childhood living with her parents and five siblings on a farm in Lincoln County, Kansas. Brown graduated from Burr Oak High School in Burr Oak, Kansas and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Kansas State College.

In 1959, she married William John Teaford with whom she would have two children. After her marriage, Teaford worked as a public library clerk in Downers Grove, Illinois where her coworkers urged her to join the League of Women Voters. She would join the League after moving to Black Hawk County, Iowa, becoming president of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls League and later president of the League of Women Voters of Iowa.

Teaford ran as a Democratic candidate in the 24th District of the Iowa House of Representatives in 1982, but her first campaign was unsuccessful. Running again in 1984, Teaford won her election for a seat in Iowa’s 71st General Assembly. Teaford was elected for four terms in the Iowa House and served on several committees throughout her tenure including Appropriations, Ways and Means, Education, and Human Resources. Following her time as a legislator, Teaford continued her activism locally in Black Hawk County and for national organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
