Biographical / Historical
In 1972, the United Nations declared that 1975 would be International Women's Year. This prompted President Gerald Ford to create the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year. Congress appropriated 5 million dollars to fund the organization of a conference which would debate and present a platform aimed at advancing equality for women to the federal government. Each state held a conference to elect delegates to the national meeting; the Iowa Women's Meeting, held earlier in 1977, selected several women who were already prominent in politics, including Jean Lloyd-Jones, Roxanne Conlin, Peg Anderson, Mori Costantino, Lonabelle Kaplan Spencer, and more.
