Scope and Contents
As with "The George Book" held by the Sackner Archive, Goswell has created another timeless impression of the American political scene with leanings toward the left. The collage consists of six hinged panels done in an accordion style. The technique of making the collage is reminiscent of the paste-ups of Jesse Collins. Proceeding from left to right, the following images and texts are presented among others: 1) Nixon rising from his coffin, 2) Rick Santorum, senator from Pennsylvania in priest's garb because of his anti-abortion stand, 3) The Allegheny National Forrest, an ancient old growth forrest near Erie where recently logging has been proposed, 4) Dole and a list of political contributors with rewards they received including Julio Gallo, Archer Daniels Midland, 5) unflattering images of politicians of the Christian right, 6) Bill Clinton with an inked epithet reading "I am the Lord Jesus Christ + I will solve all your problems + Believe in me," 6) announcement of the sale of a HMO with a $1 billion bonus to its chairman, Leonard Abramson, 7) Bob Dornan, representative from California, with war-like scenes owing to his support for the B-1 bomber, 8) Wall Street stock scam artists Milliken, Keating, Boesky grouped with Reagan and Bush, depicted as angels tramping through a graveyard, and 9) unflattering images of support for the death penalty. The extreme far right location of the collage depicts a rigged photograph of Clinton shaking hands with Gingrich and two eraser stamped slogans, viz., "Be careful Bill - you're becoming mired in the right" and "Hey...when all else fails...bomb Iraq!" -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
