Scope and Contents

The main image is a photocollage of Dole, Reagan, Gingrich, Clinton and Josef Goebbels playing poker. Clinton holds cards onto which are written, dunno, yes/no, I'm not sure, and perhaps. Dole holds cards onto which are written, distrust, AIDS, and hopelessness. Reagan holds cards onto which are jobs, corruption, and I'm for me. Gingrich holds cards onto which are written, "greed, power, and censorship." The main text image, eraser stamped with large capital letters in the center of the drawing, reprints a quote from Thomas Jefferson, "The Tree of Liberty Must be Refreshed from Time to Time with the Blood of Tyrants. It is its Natural Manure." On the right and left borders of this quote, Goswell rubberstamped an article from Harper's Weekly dealing with a public scandal involving the first Ex-President of the United States on Wall Street, Ulysses S. Grant, who was implicated in a stock market scam. The bottom third of the drawing consists of a black and white photographic print of a crowd scene from the thirties depression period. Goswell has added placards to this scene with names of contemporary American companies, e.g., ATT, Digital Equipment, Aetna, etc.. In its background, collaged signs read, "Gone to Mexico, No Jobs, Gotta pay our CEO's," etc. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
