Scope and Contents

This forty-fifth new series collage page of the Dante Diary is titled "Dante Down UnderII - In the Penal Settlement" It includes a photogrpah of Phillips standing in a country road with a sign to his left stating Beatrice Hill. Collaged fragments of a print of the tower of purgatory, a singular mountain island and a diagram of the universe are included on the page. An introduction to Phillips' visit by Eileen Starke reads, " I am pleased to introduce this exhibition of one hundred and thirty eight illustrations to Dante's 'Inferno' by the artist Tom Phillips. These are being shown for the first time in Austalia. I was delighted that Tom took up my suggestion to bring his Dante to Australia especially as this indicates he is now convinced that Australia is ready for Dante. On this subject he wrote: 'Australia is a country that Dante knew nothing about and is situated roughly where he and his Ulysses thought Purgatory was: in the 'Inferno' Ullysses catches a glimpse of a great antipodian island and promptly sinks. Australia wasn't ready for Dante then but things look different now." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
