Scope and Contents
This eighty second page is titled ''Tell Me What Is this Lunch About?" contains in depth diary additions by Phillips on the the right and left hand sides of the page as his trials and tribulations with A TV Dante continue. First in London on V/IX/XCV he writes "In the evening as Charles' guest to the ICA to hear Peter talk and show two reels of Prospero's Books..In his talk he gives me credit when talking of A TV Dante...Talked with Peter about the Tokyo experience & about the continuation of TV Dante from which he has rightly distanced himself & will not be involved as had once seemed likely in the last cantos. He described the project as 'A ship wihout a rudder' which seemed pretty accurate. Peter said that David Lynch had toyed with the idea of joining at one point. But beyond that he did not seem to know very much of what was going on. The Bob Peck scripts arrived from Millie & I started toying with them before bedtime. An old task.....a call from Millie who has been talking to Roland Wignom who felt everything was going wrong and was going to send me a fax. Duly received it was very amicable & seemed to show there was even a glimmer of light at the end of the Dutch tunnel...more to follow." The right hand of the page contains dense diary entries as Phillips' trip continues to Prugue and to Helsinki...Perhaps the fact that the ITALIA prize looms up is pulvarizing the actions on both the sides of the Forces of Darkness and the Forces of Light." The remaining days from August 30, 1991 to September4, 1991 describe the parts played by Sir John Gielgud and Bob Peck in the filming and problems with the Dutch BV Dante group. In the bottom center of the page Phillips writes in beautiful calligraphyl the following: How strange it is that a dante diary, started over a decade ago as a semi-playful record of how a book was planned and made should now come to be talking of international piracy, cynical film producers, ageing actor-knights, lunch in Helsinki with wily T.V. supremos....." The center section of the page contains a quotation in Italian written in a spiral in red ink, a torn segement of a map showing Philiips' travels, and a collage of a skull and cross bones. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
