Scope and Contents

This retospective of the books and prints was edited by Robert Rainwater. "Maximiliana" held by the Sackner Archive is described as Ernst's "highest accomplishment in printed art...adapt[ing] indirect, semi-automatic procedures originating in Surrealism of the 1920's for the realization of the book's 34 etchings and aquatints." Greet's essay, "Max Ernst and the Artist's Book." is a detailed study of collaboration of Ernst with Iliazd, based on the work of the astronomer, W. Tempel. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
