Scope and Contents

This chapbook is a collaborative class project which describes the origins of the Scripps College Press. It is based on the talk delivered by Judy Harvey Sahak in 1992 at the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Press. It was edited and arranged by the typography class consisting of Reika Go, Natalie Hamner and Penelope Willard with the assistance of Professor Kitty Maryatt. The contents consist of the correspondence between Frederic W. Goudy, designer of Scripps College Old Style, and Dorothy Drake, college librarian. Goudy wrote to the class in 1939 that Dorothy Drake "will present craft & craftsmanship in a manner to inspire you for good books & for the details of their making." Included with several handwritten letters from Goudy to Drake are drawings of letter designs and a portrait. The text of the book was printed in Scripps College Old Style from the original matrices. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
