Scope and Contents
John Maizels is the editor of Outsider Magazine and a practicing artist whose themes feature untranslatable hieroglyphics and assemblages incorporating surrealistic, whimsical creatures. Examples of these works are held by the Sackner Archive. In the introduction to this book by Roger Cardinal, Jean Dubuffet is prominently mentioned as bringing the importance of Outsider Art to the contempory art public. This profusely illustrated book depicts several examples of Outsider Art that have great affinities to works done by non-outsiders held by the Sackner Archive. Thus, drawings of squat, human-like figures done by Don Sylvester Houedard in the 1950's are similar to those done by Cesar Lombroso in 1864 (p.12). Gary Goldstein's "Molieres Ausgewahlte Werke" of 1989, an artist book in which painted abstract and primative human portraits are superimposed over the pages of the text of this printed German book recall a book done by Marcel Reja in 1907 (p.12). Genevieve Seille's contemporary drawings dealing with surrealistic humanoid figures on a background of chaotic handwritten texts are reminiscent of Johanne Knupfer drawings at the turn of the century (p.14). Seille's artist books composed of calligraphic texts and designed with inserts and folded-out pages on varnished paper recall books by Peter Meyer in the 1920's (p,19) and Adolf Wolfli in the early 20th century (pp, 22-30). An untitled drawing by J.B. Murry on p.104 is similar in imagery to one held by the Sackner Archive. This book provides appendices that list Museum and Collections, Organizations, Environments, and Bibliography dealing with Outsider Art.The layout of this book was done by Phil Baines, the British typographer, as mentioned in the periodical, U&lc Volume 23, No.2, 1996. In this book, although the spreads look fairly free-form in their layout, this misleading. The blocks of text are stepped across the pages in repeated 99 mm measurement, with footnotes pulling out precisely at the point they occur and pictures placed close to the linking text. All quotes jump out to the full measure, -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
