Scope and Contents

Amazon.com: Poet and cartoonist Austin Kleon has discovered a new way to read between the lines. Armed with a daily newspaper and a permanent marker, he constructs through deconstruction"ā€¯eliminating the words he doesn't need to create a new art form: Newspaper Blackout poetry. Highly original, Kleon's verse ranges from provocative to lighthearted, and from moving to hysterically funny, and undoubtedly entertaining. The latest creations in a long history of "found art," Newspaper Blackout will challenge you to find new meaning in the familiar and inspiration from the mundane. Newspaper Blackout contains original poems by Austin Kleon, as well as submissions from readers of Kleon's popular online blog and a handy appendix on how to create your own blackout poetry. David T. Isaak review: I don't want to knock Kleon--what he has done here is quite clever and entertaining. And he admits that the technique is not original. But people who are interested in this as an artform need to look at the monumental "The Humument," by British artist Tom Phillips. As it happens, this was just republished, and is available on Amazon. Beginning in the 1960s, Phillips used the blackout technique, along with imagery, to "treat" a long Victorian novel (resulting in "The Humument." Those who recall a mid-70s King Crimson album, Starless and Bible Black, may have been puzzled by a few blackouts from The Humument, including the haunting "this night wounds time" on the back cover. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
