Buildings and Grounds Vertical Files

Scope and Contents The Buildings and Grounds Vertical Files of the University of Iowa Archives consist of records pertaining to over 200 campus buildings and landmarks, such as bridges, statues and other features. Maps of the campus are available in Series II (miscellaneous files), documenting the University's growth since the late 1800's. The files may include, but are not limited to, newspaper articles, building dedication programs, and floor plans. Many of the files include data sheets (goldenrod color) compiled during a 1985 survey of the campus conducted by the Historic University Buildings Committee. The data sheets note the building's name and use history, additions and other modifications, construction and demolition dates, and name of architect where available.The collection is a convenient source of information about the ever-changing landscape of the University of Iowa campus. The files may include, but are not limited to, obituaries, resumes, newspaper articles, and scholarly publications. The collection is a convenient source of biographical information about University of Iowa faculty and staff.Many of the files include index cards that formed the now-defunct Faculty List, which was maintained by Archives staff until 1998. Data typed onto the individual cards were derived from the general catalogs and, as a result, may include only approximate dates of service to the University. The Historical Papers collection of the University of Iowa Archives consists mainly of articles and personal essays that pertain to University of Iowa history. The papers, mostly unpublished, address a wide variety of topics, including college and department histories, faculty biographies, academic programs, political activism, and social life. Authors are faculty, alumni, students, historians, and others associated with the University, and the papers are arranged alphabetically by name of author. The Manuscript File Collection on Early University History is a rich source on 19th-century and early 20th-century developments at the University of Iowa. It consists of the University's earliest known records documenting its business transactions, academic activity, and external communications. For the most part the material was prepared or received by William J. Haddock (1832-1906), secretary to the Board of Trustees, later Regents, from 1864 to 1901.
