Scope and Contents This densely worked book presents the rebuses of Afrika that are a continuum of the "spheres of interimagery" in the Russian social structure as expressed in folkloric tradition and in the theories of Mayakovsky and by anonymous artists. " In Afrika's rebuses, one can read the colour, texture, heaviness, light, and sound reflectability of the material...Things return to life, become oxidized, and undergo different transformations...The rebus is surrounded by an ornament which gives them all the character of an icon or of a folk-art picture. A confessional ornament is laid upon well-developed communist symbols. This deluxe edition was printed on Japanese paper and includes a drawing by Spacagna; the other 10 copies were printed on Arches Fidelis paper and do not include the Spacagna drawing. Arkitu signed his name, Arkitu J-B, on the title page and colophon. The prints appear to have been made from silkscreens since some ot the elements appear on several prints in different colors and locations. Reef-points are defined as small pieces of plaited cordage or soft rope, tapering from the middle towards each end, used for the purpose of tying up the sail in the act of reefing. The intention of each reef is to reduce the sail in proportion to the increase of the wind. Each page contains a tipped in print of varying colors with short, hand drawn, horizontal lines crossed with diagonal straight or broken lines. The prints were made in collaboration with Gary Hincks.
