Scope and Contents

Annette Lawrence is an African-American artist concerned with significant dates in her life. The drawing on a flattened, brown paper bag depicts spokes radiating from the center that consist of a series of two dates terminated with a large period. The dates mark the onset and termination of her menstrual periods from 1980-1994. Four thick vertical lines formed from her menstrual blood suggest an appearance of an incomplete cube, perhaps symbolizing absence of ovum fertilization. Lawrence was a participant in the Whitney Biennial 1997. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents

curry gives a highly favorable review for What #2. "these are not "experimental" works & this is not a magazine of same. these are fully realized accomplishments in the realm of visual language, a realm in which the wallpaper poem & scattered collage proliferate. Kaldron is a tasty antidote to drive away the eyesoreness caused by most magazines of its ilk." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Identifier: CC-50992-72071
Scope and Contents

Kay Rosen contributes an introductory essay in which she writes that "In the 1970's, I had made the transition from an academic approach to languages to a visual one because to me the most interesting things about language were not what was included in its formal rules, but rather what I stumbled upon accidentally...These most mundane and undervalued bits of speech were distinguished not only by their rejection of normal doctrine, but also by their potential to convey meaning non-linguistically. They needed to be expressed visually to be realized." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
