The festival was organized by Fernando Aguiar "to present, for the first time in Portugal, recent words by a group of the most significant international avant-garde poets..to provide a widened vision of...poetry with experimental features." Essays on Visual, Concrete and Performance Poetry and Mail Art were contributed by De Melo e Castro, Aguiar, Bory, Heidsieck, Arias-Misson, Ferrando, Hatherly, Higgins, Kac, Olbrich, de Kroon, Miccini, Pimenta & Zink. 177 small mags and documents related to the theme are listed in the final section of this catalogue. This book is a well illustrated biography of Indiana (born Robert Clark) by Susan Ryan that was an outgrowth of a PhD thesis. It deals mainly with Indiana's work from the late 1950's to the early 1970's with emphasis on his visual language works and worded sculptured columns called "herms." The art works are critiqued by Ryan. There are sections that deal with Indiana's poetry and his artist statements. Scope and Contents Charles Bernstein writes in the introductory essay that "Figuring the Word" is a wide-ranging collections of Drucker's essays in which she "presents herself as a visual artist, a literary writer, a scholar/historian, and an aesthetician. In all these areas, Drucker has made substantial contributions. But it is her synthesis of these fields that is her most extrardinary achievement." Chapters of collected essays in the book include Writing as Artifact, including a section on hypergraphy and Maurice Lemaitre; Visual Poetics; Artists' Books Past and Future; The Future of Writing; Personal Writing.
