Dan Traister, keynote speaker at the FABS Rare Book Symposium, is quoted as saying that, "the best collections are formed by people who explore new areas and who know more than their dealers and competitors. Goldsmith recorded every movement his body made on June 16, 1997 from 10 AM to 11PM without using the word "I." He attempted to reduce the body to a catalogue of mechanical movements by a strict act of observation. The list of words continue until the final chapter where they morph backwards (mirror writing in print), The text is also on the WEB with a Java applet version and was performed. Marjorie Perloff contributed an incisive afterward, "Vocable Scriptsigns" that explains the work. Scope and Contents Charles Bernstein writes in the introductory essay that "Figuring the Word" is a wide-ranging collections of Drucker's essays in which she "presents herself as a visual artist, a literary writer, a scholar/historian, and an aesthetician. In all these areas, Drucker has made substantial contributions. But it is her synthesis of these fields that is her most extrardinary achievement." Chapters of collected essays in the book include Writing as Artifact, including a section on hypergraphy and Maurice Lemaitre; Visual Poetics; Artists' Books Past and Future; The Future of Writing; Personal Writing.
