Daytrtmnt / Gallo, Peter ; Ronell A., 2002

 Item
Identifier: CC-40325-42296
Scope and Contents

In the introduction, Robert Buckeye writes, "Gallo works in the mental health system and sees the hospital, not just as a metaphor, but as an absolute reality that governs our lives...If we note that Gallo's work incorporates text, we must also understand that in his art text is a context that in itself alters picture, or what a picture might be. The title "daytrtment" signifies day treatment in a mental health institution. This book is an example of "dirty typewring."Daytrtmnt combines writing and drawing and recounts his day to day experiences as a social worker in rural Vermont and has been compared to the works of Guyotat and Artaud. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The instructor has suggested that each student "keep a record of exposure times, shutter speeds and aperture settings. In this way we can learn from our mistakes." But as Michael reveals himself through typed entries in his diary over a 2-week period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we see an unsavory, egotistical, socially clueless man who mentally justifies his own creepy behavior -- lewdness, peeping in windows, petty thefts, scams for lost-and-found items in classified ads. (Who doesn't know and wonder about people like this, what their internal processes are like?) An ongoing theme is the...
