Scope and Contents This drawing depicts a gargoyle from Beverley Minster, a parish church in the Church of England that is said to be the largest parish church in the UK. Wikipedia: Originally a collegiate church, it was not selected as a bishop's seat during the Dissolution of the Monasteries; nevertheless it survived as a parish church, and the chapter house was the only major part of the building to be lost. It is part of the Greater Churches Group and a Grade 1 Listed building. The Minster owes its origin and much of its subsequent importance to Saint John of Beverley, who founded a monastery locally around 700 AD and whose bones still lie beneath a plaque in the nave. The institution grew after his death and underwent several rebuildings. After a serious fire in 1188, the subsequent reconstruction was overambitious; the newly heightened central tower collapsed c. 1213 bringing down much of the surrounding church. Work on the present structure began around 1220. It took 200 years to complete...

Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin participated in this exhibition which examined contemporary approaches to the self portrait. This husband and wife team do not merely use the figure to express identity, but to communicate more universal themes using texts and symbols. The cover contains a portrait of Rimma titled "Light" in which she holds a baby drawn with dashes of light. A second photograph depicts Rimma with her arms, head and neck painted with the phases of the moon. This work is a collage of "photographs, diaries, notes, sketches...phantasmagoria, metamorphoses, natural horrors, and prehistoric memories: Last voices of a lost Africa." The works constituted an exhibition in Milan in 1977. There are hundreds of color plates of Beard's diaries and journals made in Africa.
