Fifty-One Towers of Babel / John Furnival., 1984
Furnival reproduced lessons from 51 language grammers as drawings in that language and arranged them in vertical fashions. He also included such signs as cattle brands and petroglyphs reflecting the far West influence on him during a year's sabbatical in New Mexico where this screen was executed. He recounted to the Sackners on the number of hours spent on this work - 1250 hours! The catalogue is identical to the catalogue for the Frosinone exhibition with the same title except for a 14 page insert printed on Kraft paper. The latter consists of brief essays by Minarelli, Giorno, Higgins, Wendt, Kostelanetz as well as statements by Helmes, Kempton, Essary, Kucharz, and Prost.
