Scope and Contents

This page depicts a cacophany of musical notes with the lines of the poem reading, "A last note his spirit blew - see the caprice of rifled life." This piece was made specifically for the Sackners and was a gift from the artist and is one half of a companion work made for Norma and Allan Wilson who introduced us to Lina Weiss. According to Presser, this contains the melody of Paul Gerhard's hymn "Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille" but the text does not accompany the piece. The bass was probably written by Johann Gottfried Bernhard (3rd son of Bach's 1st marriage as an assignment. Rods hold all the notes as color coded pierced squares. Presser imagines that the child threads the bright colors to make music. The booklet at the bottom has the name & #510 of the piece, Bach's name in # (14-41) & Presser's name in #35- -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The first page of the A book depicts 25, nearly identical, stick figures draw in ink in the style of A.R. Penck with collaged, round, red paper stickers for the heads. The heads have facial features drawn in ink. The verso has one red paper stick collaged onto the page. Each subsequent page has one less stick figure and one additional sticker on the verso. The final page of the book has one stick figure and 25 stickers collaged onto the verso. In Book B, red and green, round paper stickers are collaged onto most pages with ink, horizontal lines to emulate music scores. On other pages, surrealistic animal-like shapes, cut from music scores, are collaged onto the pages with music-like scores. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
