Cutts collaged candy jimmies on a card to suggest a pointillist painting. According to the catalogue of "The Gabrielle Keiller Collection: Surrealism and After" (held by the Sackner Archive), this piece was made by Cutts in his final year of art college. He dabbed a sponge in PVC glue, applied this to paper, and then immediately dipped the paper into a tin of thousands of candy cake decorations. Although the edition size comprised 50 copies, the process renders each one unique. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The reduction of 'Life and Work' to 'Knife and Fork' is in tune with this whole mode of affectionate distancing; but it also has further resonances, which may be seen by juxtaposing Finlay's homage to Kahnweiler with Gertrude Stein's homage to Juan Gris: Therein Juan Gris is not anything but more than anything. He made that thing. He made the thing. He made a thing to be measured. Later having done it he could be sorry it was not why they liked it. And so he made it very well loving and he made it with plainly playing. And he liked a knife and all but reasonably. Finlay (Archive entry) indicates that suprematist crosses of Malevich appear to him as abstracted early airplanes and suggests that an image from "Malevich's book" looks like an aerial dogfight. He adds a black cross to the picture with fire from its side to suggest that an enemy plane shot down by the red colored cross-airplane image of Malevich, "ace" of the avant garde. This book describes the collage work that uses cake decorations called jimmies or jubbies to suggest the tiny brush strokes of pure color seen in pointillist paintings by Seurat and other Neo-impressionist artists. Cutts reprints the correspondence between him and the Arts Council of Great Britain concerning the remounting and reissuing of the work after many of the jimmies had falllen off the card. Scope and Contents Image on the card is a map of a sea battle off the Italian coast during WWII that has the appearance of choreographed dance steps. 'Victor Sylvester's Ballroom Orchestra' was one of the leading dance band of the 1940s era. Victor Sylvester's early career was as a world champion exhibition dancer, who was also teaching ballroom dancing with his sister Gwen. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, there was a lack of good dance recordings that featured a constant tempo, something Sylvester needed for his dance studio. Most of the studios used a rather simple hand-wound phonograph to play recordings. With characteristic verve, Sylvester assembled a few musicians and made his own recording featuring songs with the pronounced beat so needed by dancers. Soon, other dance instructors were buying his records. Among his releases were "Ballroom Dancing with Victor Silvester & His Ballroom Orchestra", and "Dancing On My Heart".
