Biography

Originally formed as a women’s group by radical individuals inside The Little Red Book Store in Des Moines, IA, the Women’s Cultural Collective (WCC) was officially founded as a women’s organization in 1979 to provide a safe atmosphere for lesbians and other women who felt excluded from the mainstream feminist movement at the time. The WCC hosted monthly coffeehouse events to highlight local music acts and as audiences grew, began introducing poetry readings and other types of art performances into their lineups. They later went on to sponsor activities including movie nights, camp retreats, bike-rides, sports gatherings, and more, all to facilitate a safe place for women to engage in conversation and enjoy each other’s company. The advertising for these events were shared on the WCC newsletter and later added to the digital space in 2003 with the launching of the WCC website.
