Nolte, Quenton C.

 Person

Biography

When he was 18, Quenton Nolte enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Marion, Iowa. A week later he was sent to Audubon, Iowa to a Soil Conservation Camp. Major Chalfont, the company commander, soon had him in charge of the office. From November 1937 to 1941, Nolte progressed from enrollee, to sub-leader, to leader in June 1939. He took subaltern courses at Fort Des Moines and in February 1941 he was awarded hin subaltern certificate. This meant that he could command a company, though he never seems to have done so. He was discharged from the CCC on October 26, 1941. Major Chalfont helped Quenton enroll in the U.S. Army Air Corps andhe was sent to a new base, Pampa Army Airfield in Pampa, Texas. He was one of the first five men to arrive and help set up the base, which did not become active until mid-1942. He was made the person in charge of the six-week pilot training program, a job he kept until the base was deactivated at the end of the war. He married Elleta in 1944, at the base chapel. After the war, Quenton worked for a few years as a gauger for the Humble Pip Line Company but after training, he became a certified public accountant. He died in 2007.
