Biography

Mark Smith was born in Osceola, Iowa on January 5, 1952 and grew up in Osceola and Winterset. He graduated with a BA from Graceland College and a master's degree in social work from the University of Iowa; he eventually became the Director of Special Projects for the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa. A Democrat, he served the Marshalltown area in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2001 to 2021. He chaired the Iowa Democratic Party in 2020.
