Biography

Lois Boulware was born August 3, 1903 in Perry, Missouri. She graduated from Perry High School and Culver-Stockton College in Missouri where she received her B.A. degree in science in 1926. She then attended the University of Iowa, where she received an M.A. in 1932 and an M.D. in 1937. Boulware did her residency in Philadelphia and then returned to Iowa City as a physician in the Student Health Department at the University of Iowa Hospitals. She held that position from 1937 to 1973. Following retirement, she established a Patient Advocacy Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The Day of Surgery waiting room in the hospital was established there in her name.
