Biography

Hedwig Weger Schmidt was born in 1907 to Hulda Baumgartner Weger and George Weger at home in rural Strawberry Point, Iowa. Weger was the second oldest of eight siblings: Julia, Carl, Arthur, Paul, Helen, Elmer, Walter, and Donald. She attended a one-room country school through eighth grade, then did housework for neighbors until her marriage in 1928. She married Alfred Schmidt on the Weger family farm where they lived for nearly 50 years. They had four children: Helen, Raymond, Paul, and Dorothy. A homemaker, farm wife, and lifelong member of St. Sebald Lutheran Ladies’ Aid, Schmidt enjoyed cooking, gardening, and having her ten grandchildren visit the farm. She and her husband moved into the town of Strawberry Point in 1977. Her husband passed away shortly after they celebrated their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary. Hedwig Schmidt died two years later in 1998.
