Arcadian Gliders / Finlay, Ian Hamilton; Wheatley, Steve; Lane B., 1981

 Item
Identifier: CC-12530-12758
Scope and Contents

Consists of a boxed set of nine papercard model gliders to be cut from the prints. Each glider has been embellished with a military decal of the countries that fought World War II along with the name of a garden plant that has been printed on the rear wing. This was published in an unlimited edition. William Allen comments: Outer box made by the cult small press publisher Brian Lane. Box contains bag of elastic bands, nine silkscreen prints of different Arcadian glider kits and an instruction booklet. "Each airplane is embellished with a military decal and the name of an appropriate common garden feature has been printed on the rear wing. When the airplanes have been constructed, they may either be displayed together as a squadron or, if you have access to a garden, they should be carefully placed in the relevant spot to act as markers or name tags and a pleasing focus of interest for when the flowers are out of season." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Archive for 3 Letterheads / Finlay, Ian Hamilton; Thomson, George L.., 1973

 Item
Identifier: CC-61124-68314
Scope and Contents George L Thomson, DA (Edin) FSSJ, craftsman; born December 15, 1916, died January 2, 2001. With the death of George Thomson, Scotland has lost a craftsman and calligrapher extraordinary, known internationally to many for his teaching books, the last of which, Rubber Stamps and How to Make Them, showed his unequalled skill with a fine needle and an eraser to produce delightful engravings. His self-portrait in this medium is a little masterpiece and an excellent likeness. George left school at 14 and found difficulty getting a job owing to his stunted growth. However, he was enrolled eventually at Edinburgh College of Art, but not as a diploma student as his goal was to train for commercial art. He took his two-year prescribed course and then opted for calligraphy, lino-cutting with animals, fish, and birds as subject matter, and for this he devoted much of his time drawing at the zoo. His lino-cuts were eventually printed on vellum and beautifully bound in leather. Unusual for such...

Archive for A Garden of Wild Stones / Finlay, Ian Hamilton; Harvey, Michael; Lyle, Peter; Thorpe, John R.; Butler, Vincent; Oliver, George; Jones D., 1972 - 1973

 Item
Identifier: CC-12670-12913
Scope and Contents In Nov 1972, Finlay writes to Vincent Butler, who built the aircraft carrier sculpture for Stonypath, expressing his displeasure with the quality of the drawing for the Wild Stone project. Finlay indicates that unless Butler can produce a better drawing, their collaboration should cease. No reply from Butler is contained within this Archive and letters from Finlay to Peter Lyle, Michael Harvey, and George Thorpe are sent requesting their assistance with the project along with those of Butler. Finlay writes that the poems to be inscribed upon the Six Wild Stones are one word poems analogous to Japanese Haiku where art is a matter of brevity and suggestion and wild (native) stones in a formal area is equivalent to a Japanese rock Garden. Examples include the poem Curfew "Curlew." Curlew is a bird heard mostly on still, misty days or in the evening with a long, sad cry. Finlay includes a plan on graphite tracing paper, ...a large area mown grass ...stone paving slats...stone poems...
