This exhibition of works by American artists dealing with environmental issues was curated by Betty Bright who wrote a critical essay for the catalog. The Sackner Archive lent the artist book, Sisters of Menon, by Susan Hiller to the exhibition. The stapled pages are reviews of the exhibition. McCarney removed the covers of this encyclopedia and constructed a back case from cardboard that he covered in cloth. The opened front exposes groups of collaged pages whose edges have been chiseled out to form a zig-zag pattern. This book served as an index to a related sculptural work created for the library of the University of South Maine. It was based on the index of Encyclopedia Americana 1960, volume 30. The Emblem poem of the 16th and 17th century consisted of motto, image and verse. In the classification system utilized by the Sackner Archive, emblem poems are designated Picture Poems and consist of title (motto), image and verse on the same page, i.e., a single poem which if presented as facing pages collection of poems and poetry in a book would be designated an Illustrated Book.
