Biography

The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a nonprofit organization established, in its own words, "by fans to serve the interests of fans by providing access to and preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture in its myriad forms." OTW's mission is to ensure that fannish materials are recognized as both legal as and as creatively transformative. Again, in its own words, "We are proactive and innovative in protecting and defending our work from commercial exploitation and legal challenge. We preserve our fannish economy, values, and creative expression by protecting and nurturing our fellow fans, our work, our commentary, our history, and our identity while providing the broadest possible access to fannish activity for all fans." OTW is involved with a number of ongoing projects, including an open-source electronic archive of fannish works that are born digital or preserved digitally; an effort to provide legal defense for fans working to protect their intellectual property rights; the maintenance of a fandom wiki; and the production of an online peer-reviewed journal devoted to scholarship on fannish works and practices. For more information on OTW, consult its website at http://transformativeworks.org/.
