4-H STYLE REVUE - These two girls who won top placings in the girls 4-H style revue which was held during the annual county fair this week. Karen Crawford, left, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Crawford of Washington, was selected as winner in the senior girls division of the dress revue and Patty Gerdes, right, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Igrold Gerdes of Ainsworth took first place in the junior class. The are modeling the dresses which they made themselves and wore during the dress revue. Karen will represent Washington County at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.; Jim Wells, above, probably has as much right as anyone to wear thal happy look after winning five blue ribbons, two red ribbons and a championship ribbon in the rabbit division at the county fair here Tuesday. Jim, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Burt Wells of near Washington, exhibited eight rabbits and took the champion doe award. The black and white rabbit barely visible in the above picture and looking somewhat like an intruder, was the young doe responsible for the champlonship honors.; County Fair Food Workers; Judging Wednesday in both the livestock and girls 4-H departments of the Washington County Fair added new names to the list of champions for this year's fair. Vaughn Rinner, 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs Don Rinner. of Washington, shows her Hereford beef heifer which was named breed champion in the beef heifer class. A beef heifer also belonging to Vaughn received reserve champion ratings in the same division.; Judging Wednesday in both the livestock and girls 4-H departments of the Washington County Fair added new names to the list of champions for this year's fair. Gary Sccheeler, son of Mr and Mrs. Donald Scheeler of Brighton, shows his baby beef which won the “rate of gain" contest. Gary's calf gained an average of 2.85 nounds per day since January 1.; One of the highlights of the judging at the fair each year is the announcement of the grand champion winner in the baby beef division. Dean Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milo Weaver of near Ainsworth, Shows his baby beef which won the grand champlonship honors in that division.; Two county 4-H girls were selected to exhibit their sewing projects at the state fair after winning blue ribbon honors on projects which they exhibited here. Doing some finishing touches on the store dummy which is dressed in one of the prize winning hand-made dresses are Janet White, left, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane White of Ainsworth, and Claudia Tinnes, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Cloyca Tinnes of Washington.; The local fair grounds was a hub of activity here Monday morning, opening day of the annual county fair, as local organizations and businesses worked to finish setting up refreshment stands and commercial exhibits, carnival workers labored at setting up the many rides on the midway and the hundreds of cattle, hogs, sheep and other lievstock were unloaded from trucks and trailors into the livestock barns and shelters. Bob Greene of Ainsworth, left, Leroy Shoemaker of Kalona, center, and Keith Stewart of Keota, right, spent the morning marking pigs for the quality pork carcass contest which is a new contest in the livestock portion of the fair this year. Green, who is in charge of the new contest, said that each swine exhibitor has one of his three pigs marked. On Friday the marked pigs, expected to be about 60 in number, will be transported to the John Morrell Plant in Ottumwa where they will be slaughtered and the carcass of each pig rated and judged by plant officials. Green stated the contest places the emphasis on quality meat production.; The types of livestock may have been different but the smiles on the faces of the youths are all the same. Bernard Bartlolow, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Bartholow of Washington is pictured with the lamb which won for him championship honors in the individual market lamb division. Bernard's lamb also took the reserve championship in the individual and grand champion in the market lambs pen of three. Bernard also showed the champion Duroc litter and reserve champion gilt in the purebred hog class.; Eddle Jones, son of Mr and Mrs. Alvin Jones of Crawfordsville, swept the honors in the market hog division of the Washington County Fair Tuesday as he exhibited both the individual champlonship market hog and the champion pen of three.; Taking top honors in the senior demonstration division of the girls' 4-H department at the Washington County Fair here were Karen Van Sant, left, and Mary Ann, Green, right, with their demonstration showing the best way of removing stains entitled, "Shoo Away, Stains." After winning at the county level the two girls, members of the Marion Maids 4-H Club, will present their prize winning demonstration at the lowa State Fair in Des Moines later this month. Karen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arlis Van Sant of Wayland and Mary Ann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Green of Wayland.; Putting in several busy hours during the first day of the annual Washington County Fair here Monday morning were Arvid Anderson of Crawfordsville, left, and Marion Augustine of West Chester, right. The two men, both past presidents of the county beef producers association and members of the livestock committee for this year's county fair, spent the morning at the scales in one of the buildings on the fair grounds weighing the 4-H beef calves. Baby beeves and other beef cattle will be judged later on during the fair which lasts until Friday of this weck.
