Materials Specific Details

Purchased in Japan in January of 2020 during a visit to see Richard Flavin at an antique lighting specialty shop named “Akari.” The word is a general term for light, or lighting fixtures. I used the original bamboo bones, and the threads which run top to bottom in each quarter of the lamp

diameter. The threads are not always included in Odawara chochin but they do a lot to help strengthen the final paper and bamboo assembly. These bamboo hone or bones run as a continuous spiral in this lantern. Top and bottom pieces are made of brass. The high degree of fit and finish suggests the basic shapes at least were made with a die and hydraulic press. The brass double link chain is original. Finished restoration was treated with linseed oil which is, I believe, the alternative to kakishibu to make the paper resistant to rain, snow or mist. The more authentic “e-abura” used on lanterns was apparently perilla seed oil. Very close, if not identical to #38 below.
