Materials Specific Details
Lantern, bag, brass gourd netsuke. I fashioned the netsuke stopper from deer antler. Also made round, 4 strand thread braid that attaches stopper to gourd. Probably originally used for snuff or powdered incense, possibly body incense/perfume. (Interestingly the lantern does have a slight perfumed smell). Note that the hibukuro (flamebag) is now part of the hibukuro sub-collection documented in the 5 Other, Elsewhere, and Appendix file.
Also, made a replica candle holder (rosoku-ire] with deer antler toggle or netsuke. Again, round braid from 4 strands of waxed linen thread attach the two. Together with the above they would make a complete Odawara chochin travel lantern kit. See an authentic candle holder under 5 OTHER, ELSEWHERE and APPENDIX.
Also see additional information on the gourd shaped netsuke in the APPENDIX
Nick Cladis says regarding the writing on the firebag (hibukuro)
“[These kanji are] "Shiraki /gi" (white tree) 白木 -- it is a surname in Japan, but until today, I didn't know it is most common specifically in western Japan. So same deal: a surname, likely some sort of establishment.” The firebag appears to have been pasted together from standard size shoji paper and apparently caught fire at some point. Removed firebag and steamed it to keep it extended.
