Types of engines include: Steam, Diesel, Gas/Electric, and Electric. Types of train cars include, but are not limited to: cabooses, tank cars, refrigeration cars, hoppers, and passenger streetcars. Each photograph is stored in an individual envelope. The envelope records the following information about the enclosed photograph: the name of the railroad, the engine or car number, and the location and date of the photo. Photographs are arranged in the collections overall by railroad name, and within that by engine or car number."P-#" refers to the box number. Some railroads appear in multiple boxes, in separate sequences. For example, there are Amtrak photographs in boxes P46-47, and then again in P348-349.
