Scope and Contents

The Norbert (Norb) Tatro Papers date from 1978-2016 and are organized into seven series: Awards, Clippings, Photographs, Press Passes, Specials, Travel, Reporter's Notebooks, and Audiovisual. The bulk of the collection documents Norbert Tatro's career as a producer for both local and national news networks.

The Awards series (1985) is comprised of a National News and Documentary Emmy Award honoring Norbert Tatro for his work in producing "The Photographer" (NBC Nightly News).

The Clippings series (2016) includes the news article, "His Life as a Journalist," from the Globe Gazette. The article discusses Nobert Tatro's interests in journalism and his beginning career as a producer.

The Photographs series (undated) includes photographs of Nobert Tatro's work life and travels.

The Press Passes series (1982-1983) includes several press passes and badges from Tatro's travels within both the United States and abroad.

The Specials series (1978-1990) includes scripts, notes, interviews, and resources used for television specials produced by Norbert Tatro. These specials span several topics and titles. The series include six subseries: Aviation (1988-1990); Climate (1978-1979); The Crash of Flight 191 (1979); Judges/Politics (1979); O'Hare Security (1979); and Shift Workers (1990). The Aviation subseries includes scripts and supplemental resources for the segments: Flying on the Edge (1988); O'Hare Security (1989); Danger in the Cockpit (1989); and Bottle to Throttle (1990). The Climate subseries includes scripts and supplemental resources to the news segments: Climate (1979); Boonies Aerials (1979), and Medley Appoint (1979).

The Travel series (1980-1987) includes mostly expense reports from Nobert Tatro's work travel for NBC.

The Reporter's Notebooks series (1983-1988) are organized by year and contain references, interview responses, and general notes from news segments for NBC.

The Audiovisual series (1980-1986) contains news segments produced by Norbert Tatro in videocassette format. Most segments are produced for NBC Nightly News.

Biographical / Historical

Norbert (Norb) Tatro grew up in Mason City, Iowa, where he attended Mason City High School and graduated in 1961. With interests in speech, photography, history and current events, Tatro continued his education at the prestigious Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Tatro worked as a television journalist and producer at several news stations including: WTMJ (NBC) in Milwaukee, WBBM-TV (CBS) in Chicago, and by 1975 WMAQ-TV (NBC) in Chicago. By 1979, Tatro's work consisted of creating segments for "NBC Nightly News" and "Today." In the late 1980s, Tatro returned to producing news segments for the local news. Most of Tatro's career was spent as a producer at WMAQ/NBC in Chicago. In 1997, Tatro left WMAQ/NBC and continued his career teaching college-level journalism at Truman State (then Roosevelt University) in Chicago. Norbert Tatro retired in 2004.
