Scope and Contents

The papers of Stewart Stern consist of approximately ten linear feet and date from 1931-1983. The material is arranged chronologically within two major alphabetical groupings. The first division is related primarily to Stern's youth and private life. Included here are his academic records, memorabilia and correspondence from his military service during WWII, appointment calendars, photographs, interviews, articles he has written and correspondence from many important people in the film industry. The second category contains Stern's work as a screenwriter. Arranged by title, this section includes workbooks, various holograph and typescript drafts, photographs, publicity, reviews and correspondence relating to each film project.

Abstract

American motion picture and television screenwriter. Primarily material documenting his career, with research notebooks, rough dra s and final versions of many of his screen and teleplays, along with photographs from the productions. Also personal material including correspondence and his education and military records.

Boxes 1-21 at n05:08:6-n05:09:2 (sans Box 6), plus one under seal at n05:09:2. This last came out from under seal in February 2015 upon the death of Stewart Stern.

Box 6 may not exist. Its entry in the finding aid duplicates the entry for box 5 and there is no room on the shelf for a Box 6. jlr 7/2011

A box containing tapes and CD copies of these tapes of Marlon Brando and James Dean, and original handwritten pages of Rebel Without a Cause are in the vault at v1:03:4.

Original handwrtter pages of Rebel Without A Cause are in the vault by the Mses.

Photographs of Paul Newman, Joann Woodward and their family are at v15:02:7. Mrs. Stern wants these restricted for some years (20?), starting in 2018. jlr

The document box part of the collection has been moved to n23:12:6 on 12/8/2020, the remaining materials that need to be processed are in section one of the processing shelves near the north processing table. Three oversize, flat boxes have been moved to a rolling cart with gallup material on them (those will be addressed, re-housed, etc)-JSB
