Wayne Patton Fan Collection
Scope and Contents
The Wayne Patton Collection consists of documents, photo albums, and handmade objects related to his passions for fantasy and science-fiction. There are three series in this collection: Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy gaming, science-fiction pulp magazines, and materials from the Society for Creative Anachronism. The first series encompasses rare Dungeons & Dragons figurines and magazines related to fantasy gaming, such as “The Dragon” and “Judges Guild.” Of the latter magazine, Patton collected issues as far back as the 1970s when the title was first published. The second series, science-fiction pulp magazines, contains a range of titles including “Analog,” “Asimov’s Science Fiction,” and “The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.” He collected issues from the 1960s all the way up to the late 2010s, meaning this collection contains a significant part of the lifespan of these popular pulp magazines. The third and final series, the Society for Creative Anachronism, is also the most extensive. The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) was founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California, and has since spread across the U.S.A. and several other countries. Wayne Patton and his wife Elizabeth were both active members of the SCA, which is dedicated to hosting medieval-inspired tournaments, feasts, and other events, as well as promoting craftsmanship from the Middle Ages. Most of the SCA documents in this collection are booklets related to the “Kingdom of Calontir,” a region that encompasses Iowa, where the Pattons resided, and several other Midwestern states. These booklets were sent out monthly to subscribers and contain articles about medieval history, recipes, blacksmithing, sewing, and other educational information relating to life in the past. Finally, as an SCA “Herald,” Wayne and his fellow heralds were in charge of record-keeping in their kingdoms as well as designing and approving new members’ medieval names and personal symbols. Because of this, the collection contains many binders detailing each SCA applicant’s status and feedback regarding their proposed names and symbols. There are also several scrapbooks made by Elizabeth “Betty” Patton recording SCA events, and handmade objects collected by the couple including coins, jewelry, and textiles.
