Abstract

Hartman trained as an engineer and served in the Army during World War II, later earning a Ph.D. in psychology. From 1962 to 1975, he was attached to the manned space program and served much of that time as Senior Research Engineer for Crew Performance and Training for North American Aviation, Inc. Much of his work was classified. His papers, accumulated long after retirement, document varied aspects of the Apollo and related space programs, particularly the lives of the early astronauts and their families.

Some materials included in the collection are club journals and magazines, convention stationery, board games, magnifying glasses, smoking pipes, deerstalker hats, and an umbrella and cane, both with a sculpture of Sherlock Holmes for the handles.

This collection is made up of five series: RULEBOOKS, PERIODICALS, SECONDARY ADVENTURE MATERIALS, OTHER GAMES, and MISCELLANEOUS RULEBOOKS contains official Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks released by TSR PERIODICALS contains licensed fan magazines produced by Judges Guild that discuss Dungeons & Dragons and publish fan-made material SECONDARY ADVENTURE MATERIALS contains both official adventure modules released by TSR and licensed Judges Guild modules and tools. Most of these materials were designed specifically to work alongside the official Dungeons & Dragons rules, while others are not designed for a specific game system, but are still compatible.
