CSS (Compagnie Sucriere Senegalaise) irrigation canal, 17 km. The canal extends from Richard Toll to Lac de Ger. It was built when salt water intrusion up the Senegal River during the dry season threatened to ruin the sugar cane fields in RT.

Mosquee of Cheik Amadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride brotherhood (a Sufi order of Islam). He also preached non-violent resistance to French colonialism, a crime for which he spent years in prison.

Thies, Senegal. Ted Kaskow, Moise N'Diaye, Charles Chopak, Sean Mackey, Phil Carls. Our open-air classroom was in session from 8-12 and from 3-6:30. At the time a biology major was required fisheries volunteers. In retrospect, French would have been a good idea, too….
