Biographical / Historical
The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy was founded in 1885 as the Department of Pharmacy. Its aim was to "furnish the pharmacists of Iowa and the northwest an opportunity for acquiring a thorough practical education in the departments of science most intimately connected with the practice of pharmacy." Early faculty members included the founding Dean, E. L. Boerner and the "Grand and Glorious Lady of Pharmacy," Zada Cooper. In 1900, the department was a founding member of The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and in 1902, the Department of Pharmacy became the College of Pharmacy.
In 1938, through the efforts of the "father of the hospital pharmacy" and the college's fourth dean, Louis C. Zopf, the College of Pharmacy established the nation's first hospital pharmacy graduate program. In 1965, Pharmacy faculty member William W. Tester estabished the Iowa Drug Information Service, which is now consulted by nearly 700 health centers and colleges of pharmacy and medicine around the world.
