Abstract

The Ira H. Pierce Collection of History of Medicine Glass Slides consists of lantern slides from Professor Ira Pierce's "History of Medicine" course taught in the College of Medicine from 1938-1964. The slides span medical practices and notable doctors from prehistoric times through the early 20th century and were used in accompaniment to Pierce's lectures.

Biographical / Historical

Ira Hotchkiss Pierce graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. and M.S. in 1925 and a Ph.D. in 1931. After graduating, Pierce was a research associate at UI until 1938, when Pierce became an associate professor of pharmacology and began teaching the undergraduate course "History of Medicine" until 1964.

The class taught "the development of medical ideas and practices from prehistoric times to the present, and medical progress as related to the cultural backgrounds of the various periods. [It was a] lecture course, illustrated by slides and collateral reading."
