Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Judith Brodkey papers date from 1977-2016 and measure approximately 15 linear inches. The papers include documents and audio/visual materials arranged into six series: Personal; Professional; UN Conference on Women, Nairobi; UN Conference on Women, Beijing; Faith and Activism; and an Artifacts series containing a plaque.

The Personal series dates from 1977-2016 and contains creative writing/poetry written by Brodkey, as well as several of Brodkey’s school papers, including an analysis of economic racism in the U.S. This series also includes miscellaneous speeches, articles, and correspondence, mainly relating to Brodkey's reflections on organizing delegations to the UN women's conferences, as well as a Passover Hagaddah compiled by Brodkey in 1995.

The Professional series dates from 1984 to 2015 and reflects several organizations Brodkey worked for. Material related to Oregon Mediation Association, for which Brodkey served as executive director from 2008-2013, includes records of mediation conferences planned by Brodkey, newsletters, reports, and administrative materials. Material related to Brodkey's employment at the Oregon Health Sciences University and Legacy Health System in Portland, Oregon including training materials she designed and/or presented on topics such as behavioral interviewing, working through conflict, and customer service. The series also contains some material related to Brodkey's work for the Oregon Prenatal Smoking Cessation Project and the Cleveland Sight Center for the Blind, as well as records of workshops on forgiveness led by Brodkey and miscellaneous professional publications she edited or contributed to.

The UN Conference on Women, Nairobi series dates from 1985 and contains conference reports and publications, as well as Brodkey's personal trip log. The series also contains notes, drafts, correspondence, and a cassette tape recording produced by Brodkey, all relating to reports Brodkey presented to various groups about her Nairobi experience.

The UN Conference on Women, Beijing series dates from 1995 and contains materials related to Judith’s organizing effort for the 1995 United Nations Conference on Women NGO Forum in Beijing, China. This includes maps, schedule of activities, conference publications, and correspondence. The materials also include various speeches and presentations Brodkey made reporting back on the Beijing conference.

The Faith and Activism series dates from 1990-2001 and contains various publications, fliers, contact sheets, and notes related to several of Brodkey's work with the Re-evaluation Counseling Community’s Jewish Women’s Gather-In, as well as three organizations or events Brodkey co-founded: the Portland Middle East Peace Project, the Iowans in Oregon picnic, and a 1994 gathering for Jewish women named Judy or Judith in the Portland area.
