The Doris “Jean” Wells Shook papers date from 1937 to 2015 and measure 2.71 linear feet (7 boxes). The collection is organized into 4 series: Biographical, Sweet Adelines, Scrapbooks, and Photographs.

The Biographical series (1937-2015) contains materials related to Shook’s education and childhood in Springville, a newspaper clipping from her time attending Iowa Wesleyan College, a script of her musical “Springtown” and program from when it was performed, and programs from her memorial service. It also includes a commemorative plate.

The Sweet Adelines series (1947-2011) holds materials related to Shook’s membership in Sweet Adelines. This series contains newspaper and magazine clippings of Shook, publications from Sweet Adelines, materials related to international trips, music programs, and administrative materials related to Shook’s chorus directorship and membership with the International Board of Directors. Also included are travel diaries from the USO trip and accolades given to Margaret Layer DeJaynes, Shook’s sister and fellow quartet member.

The Scrapbooks series (1956-1986) contains several scrapbooks put together by Shook and other Sweet Adelines members, including a photo album from Shook’s retirement.

The Photographs series (1943-2005) contains photographs from Shook’s personal and professional life. Included are photos from her youth in Springville, 25th anniversary high school reunion, retirement party, and photos with and of family and friends. The photos in the Sweet Adelines sub-series include photos from her quartets and choruses. Also included are photos of other Sweet Adelines members and quartets.

This series is completed with music programs from Shook’s performances with SPEBSQA, the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society).
