Scope and Contents

The Shrauger Family Papers date from 1934 to 2005 and measure 3.2 linear feet. The papers are divided into twelve series. Correspondence I-VII; Biographical material; Newspaper clippings and memorabilia; Scrapbook; Writings by Cornelia Prentiss Shrauger;and Photographs. The bulk of the Shrauger Family Papers consists of the correspondence of Cornelia Prentiss Shrauger, her husband Harold Shrauger Sr.; their three children Harold Jr., Cornelia, and Virginia; Harold and Frances' daughter Francy; and close friends of the Shrauger family.

Biographical / Historical

Cornelia Prentiss, the eldest daughter of Henry James Prentiss and Lué Bradley Prentiss [see Bradley Family Papers], was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York in 1896 and moved to Iowa City, Iowa in 1905 when her father established the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology at the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa). Cornelia Prentiss Shrauger and her husband Harold Shrauger, Sr., lived in Atlantic, Iowa where Shrauger operated a home and office appliance store. Their three children were Harold, Jr.(1916-2004), Cornelia (1919-2004), and Virginia (b. 1922). Harold Shrauger, Jr., a sales representative for Allied Mills, and his wife Frances Kephart Shrauger (1915-2004) lived in Le Mars, Iowa. Their daughter Frances (Francy) was born in 1944, graduated from the State University of Iowa in 1966,and moved to Chicago where she worked in merchandising at Marshall Field's Department Store. In 1968 she married (Charles) Edward Snow. Their daughter, Jennifer, was born in 1971. Cornelia Shrauger married (John) Robert Day in1940. They lived in Washington, Iowa. Their two sons were Dennis (1946-1997) and Edward (b. 1947). [See Cornelia Day Papers.] Virginia Shrauger married (Joe) Allen Jones, an attorney, in 1944 and resided in Rochester, New York. They were later divorced. Their four children are Angela (b. 1946), Dennis (b. 1950), Cornelia (b. 1954), and Prentiss (b.1956).

Method of Acquisition

The papers (donor no. 112) were donated by Virginia Shrauger Jones in 1987 and succeeding years.
