Biographical / Historical
Gloria Henry and Edna Woodburn founded the Four Seasons Garden Club in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1969 and along with eight other members joined the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. Attending a 1970 district meeting and presentation by Mary Eisinger on Japanese flower arranging, or "ikebana," piqued the curiosity of Four Seasons member Bernie Knight who asked Eisinger to accompany her on a one-month trip to Japan to learn more on the subject. Knight held regular workshops in Iowa City on the art of Japanese floral arrangement for several years. At its peak, the Four Seasons Garden Club had 30 active members who met monthly for programs and workshops. Meetings included trips to small-town Iowa and state gardens, discussion of gardening tools, and guest lectures. Each year the club held a fall floral sale to raise money for its outings and scholarships. Other annual events included a meeting at Oaknoll Retirement Residence and an annual luncheon. In 2001 the club voted to leave the federation.
