Scope and Contents

The Lockwood Barnett collection measures 4.5 linear feet. The collection is arranged in seven series: Echoes from the Archives; Family histories and genealogies; Echoes from the Archives research files; Lockwood family; Clara Lockwood Dorman family; Barnett family; and Audiovisual.

The Echoes from the Archives (1997) series contains a five volume set of books written by Mary Lockwood Laughlin detailing the history of the Lockwood and Barnett families. Mary Lockwood Laughlin did primary research to verify dates and relationships and then used family stories, letters, and newspaper articles to tell the stories of the lives of the Lockwood and Barnett family members.

The Family histories and genealogies (1981-2006) series is an annotated version of Echoes from the Archives focusing on the stories of individual descendants from the Lockwood and Barnett families. This series contains a hard copy of a PowerPoint presentation, biographical information, family trees, and photographs.

The Echoes from the Archives research files (1972-2011) series is composed of six subseries: Research books that mention the Lockwood name; Places; Research repositories in England and in the US; Resources used to write Echoes from the Archives; Correspondence; and Research files, which contains genealogical information, bibliographies, the Barnett Correspondent’s list and registry index, British registers and indexes, and British vital records.

The Lockwood Family (1722-2011) series contains information about people with the Lockwood surname, correspondence between Mary L. Laughlin and Lockwood family members, newspaper clippings, photographs and a photo album of family members and visiting sites, books published about or by family members, diaries belonging to Loretta E. Lockwood, and a painting by Veronica Grace Lockwood.

The Clara Lockwood Dorman Family (1853-1948) series contains biographical and genealogical information; correspondence between Mary L. Laughlin and Clara Lockwood Dorman’s grandchildren, Prudence Malcolm and Sir C. Dorman; newspaper clippings and articles; information about her husband Sir Arthur Dorman’s company Dorman Long; and photographs of Clara Lockwood Dorman and Sir Arthur Dorman, houses, and their graves.

The Barnett Family (1820-1948) series contains biographical and genealogical information about the Barnett family, correspondence between Mary L. Laughlin and members of the Barnett family, and photographs of family members.

The Audiovisual series contains two CDs, which store digital copies of the collection. One CD (do304) has an introduction to the collection, detailing the collection’s original arrangement. The series is stored in the IWA audiovisual collection.

Biographical / Historical

Longridge Barnett (1820-1888) belonged to a family who owned a shipping business in London. He and Sarah Lowen (1821-1888) married in London in September 1842. Soon afterwards they left for New York by boat. In 1852, Longridge Barnett and Sarah Lowen Barnett traveled by boat to New Orleans and then up the Mississippi River until they reached Dubuque, Iowa. It was Longridge Barnett’s decision to become a landowner that led him and Sarah Lowen Barnett to settle in Iowa on a farm called Belle Grove. From the time they arrived in the US to the time they settled in Iowa, Longridge Barnett and Sarah Lowen Barnett had five children.

In 1856, Longridge’s sister Elizabeth Longridge Barnett Lockwood and her husband Robert Barrett Lockwood arrived in Worthington, Iowa, with their six children from London, England. During their time in Worthington until 1875, Robert Barrett Lockwood served two terms on the board of supervisors in his county. By 1867, Robert Barrett Lockwood was elected as a state representative from District 41 to the 12th Session of Iowa General Assembly held in Des Moines from January 13 to April 8, 1868.

Between the Lockwood and Barnett families, there were 14 children in 1865, and by 1908 there were 72 grandchildren. Detailed description and research of the families and their descendants can be found in the five volume set Echoes from the Archives.
