Scope and Contents

The Janice Malfeld Becker papers date from 1979 to 2016 and measure 20.4 linear inches (4 boxes). The papers, which consist almost entirely of Becker’s personal diaries, are arranged in chronological order.

Biographical information includes Becker’s obituary and correspondence from her sister, Diane Malfeld, about Becker’s life and the significance of her diaries as a record of the new choices and opportunities available to women in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The rest of the collection consists of sixty-five diaries, with daily entries written by Becker between 1979 and 2016. The collection does not include diaries for 1987, 1989-1990, or 2010-2015. Becker records her day-to-day activities while living and working in Iowa City. A typical entry refers to her work as a lawyer, meetings she attended, exercise routines, and meals. There is some discussion of the organizations in which she was involved. Box 4 includes two notebooks in which Becker made notes regarding her cat’s health, as well as a detailed letter she wrote to her veterinarian. Three travel journals in Box 4 specifically record her observations during trips taken in 2002, 2006, and 2007 to destinations including Istanbul, Greece, and Thailand. Other diaries not specifically travel diaries also record trips to Spain and other countries.
