Scope and Contents
The Solon Women’s Club records date from 1951 to 1982 and measure 10 linear inches (4 boxes). The records are arranged in two series: Administrative and Scrapbooks. The administrative series contains attendance and financial records, meeting minutes, and club programs. The meeting minutes and programs record club activities, guest speakers, and meeting topics.
The scrapbook series contains four scrapbooks. The “Newspaper clippings, 1957-1970” scrapbook in box 1 has been disbound. It consists of newspaper clippings about the club and its members. A general scrapbook (brown) contains photographs and other materials documenting club activities from 1951-1973 (box 2). The “A Library for Solon, 1963-1964” Scrapbook (box 3) documents the club’s work to establish the Solon Public Library, which opened in May 1965. The “Solon Care Center Project, 1978-1979” scrapbook (box 4) contains photographs and newspaper clippings about the club’s landscaping and beautification project for the care center.

Biographical / Historical
The Solon Women’s Club of Solon, Iowa was founded in 1951 under the name Solon Junior Women’s Club and became part of the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs later that year. The club changed its name to Solon Young Women’s Club in 1953 and Solon Women’s Club in 1964. In addition to regular programs, the Solon Women’s Club did many community service projects. Some of the service projects include the preservation of Stone Academy, summer playground supervision, the establishment of a public library in Solon, and the beautification of the Solon Care Center.
