Scope and Contents

The Kristi Ferguson papers date from 1991 to 2019 and measure 15 linear inches in one box. The papers are arranged in two series: Biographical and Audiovisual. The Biographical (2019) series includes a photocopy of Ferguson's curriculum vitae and a copy of Friends for Life, a book she authored about her decades long friendship with five other women from Concordia College. The Audovisual series completes the collections with raw footage of "The Barbara Fassbinder Story" and a related documentary "Three Faces of AIDS."

Biographical / Historical

Kristi Martinson Ferguson was born In Ortonville, Minnesota, in 1949. She received a B.A. from Concordia College in 1971, an M.S.W. from the University of Michigan in 1973, and a Ph.D. from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan in 1982. She married John Elvin Ferguson in 1973.

Ferguson’s career focused on medical education and after earning her Ph.D. she moved to Iowa City where she held several positions as an administrator and faculty between 1983 and 2018. While at the University of Iowa she also produced The Barbara Fassbinder Story, a 1991 documentary about a nurse in Iowa who became the first healthcare worker to contract HIV on the job. It won awards from the American Film and Video Association, the Iowa Film Awards, and the CINE Golden Eagle Awards.
